Along with hard scrabble farming and harvesting wood for the home fires some of the men here worked on building a railbed for the electric rail car that brought people and freight to and from Providence, Rhode Island. This feat was accomplished by about 100 men and very little machinery.<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMNCzMX9I-W31shLYNX0eUjn0fSS8twoBmOtLjTf5O0kouj3AdIBzwveuusYHW_qDqsCQlU8AlOwx0KwZ6UZC0zj18IaEUjNZEQVdTbu2lUuB0GD9KH9E_J22H8hF1BUL0RdqMuVvjSd7nR4m7BjQ8TbE9ro_Z8uy67EBN2MeMozFmkWka7jdFXhhakEhQ/s3920/180004BB-8AEF-4459-8A8B-C4B9F074C103.jpeg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" width="320" data-original-height="2826" data-original-width="3920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMNCzMX9I-W31shLYNX0eUjn0fSS8twoBmOtLjTf5O0kouj3AdIBzwveuusYHW_qDqsCQlU8AlOwx0KwZ6UZC0zj18IaEUjNZEQVdTbu2lUuB0GD9KH9E_J22H8hF1BUL0RdqMuVvjSd7nR4m7BjQ8TbE9ro_Z8uy67EBN2MeMozFmkWka7jdFXhhakEhQ/s320/180004BB-8AEF-4459-8A8B-C4B9F074C103.jpeg"/></a></div> From left; George Jacques, Myron Northrum, James E. Restaurants Forced to CloseThe owners of two restaurants that share a right of way with the East Brooklyn Ct. Fire Department say they are closing the locations known as "The Ice Box" and the restaurant next door called "Suto's."
The issues began two years ago when the Fire Dept. had concerns over restaurant customers parking illegally on the street that is used by emergency vehicles. One thing led to another and lawsuits were
initiated against the owners of the popular eateries who have used up over 100,000 defending themselves and cannot continue losing money. They plan to look for a location to start over in another town.<iframe frameborder="0" height="270" src="https://youtube.com/embed/Dbrt9kOy4D8?si=GjCgUhKmpWyar-dl" style="background-image: url(https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Dbrt9kOy4D8/hqdefault.jpg);" width="480"></iframe>Jack Hollandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13661202005161538542noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-987230819743069845.post-17873872776145467752024-02-15T19:45:00.001-05:002024-02-17T13:43:16.744-05:00A friend, face contorted with pain from being shunned by loved ones and not knowing the reason for their behavior. She'd given so much of herself without appreciation or acknowledgement. She searched for answers. She struggled, but in the end couldn’t find one. You might appreciate the quiet peaceful way of life suggested in the
white gable roofed homes. You'll see a tiny post office that serves a small population and the town hall and library are inviting a look see too. On your walk you can see all of the campers and stages of the festival and
the beautiful hills and wild river that complete the scene.
When hungry check out the 1830's country store for a great snack or go back to the food vendors at the fairgrounds.<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; What too many of us miss
out on is seeing the iconic Vermont village that surrounds the fairgrounds. If you venture up the hill to Rt. 110 you'll find an old country store opened in 1830 it's a great place to sit with a coffee and snack

We were following the Crooked Road, Virginia's Heritage Music Trail. We visited
numerous music venues and had a blast hearing bluegrass and traditional music for hours. By chance we came across Mabry's Mill on the parkway in Meadows of Dan, Virginia. Built in 1905 by Ed and Lizzie Mabry with the
help of neighbor Newton Hylton. The gristmill, waterwheel and flume were built with hand tools. All of these buildings have been restored to show a slice of rural life in the 1900's. Below are the mill, sluiceway and
the Mathews cabin which sits on the approximate site of the Mabry's farmhouse which was dismantled after his death in 1938.

Good news is a new group of entrepenuers have jumped in to bring a sense of renewal to the empty streets with a couple of restaurants slated to open soon, a coffee shop and other retail sites newly opened that are bringing folks back to the borough. I wish them well and hope more people come out to support them. Danielson and the town of Killingly have a good vibe going, check it out.<iframe frameborder="0" height="270" src="https://youtube.com/embed/YYU_JhjSRuk?si=Y3Yxgx_iFnAUpSPG" width="480"></iframe>Jack Hollandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13661202005161538542noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-987230819743069845.post-90028284538623035962024-01-03T18:59:00.003-05:002024-01-03T18:59:59.052-05:00Tiffany and Company, the humble beginnings. In 1837 Charles Lewis Tiffany borrowed 1.000 dollars from his father who owned a cotton mill on Tiffany Street in Brooklyn, CT.
He and a friend, John B. Young used the money to buy a small stationary store in New York City. As they expanded they added
glassware, porcelain, clocks and jewelry. They built a reputation for selling top quality items and in 1848 began manufactoring
their own jewelry. They now have over 300 stores worldwide and revenue of over 4 billion dollars and it all began with a
thousand dollars on Tiffany Street in Brookly, CT.

It took driving through several </span>neighborhoods<span style="font-family: inherit;"> to get a few pictures. I guess it's not a big deal anymore. At one time seems like most home's had at least a couple of ornaments on the lawn or lights strung on the eaves celebrating Christmas. We were able to find several after traversing many streets. opportunity to spend a week in Southwesten Virginia and Western North Carolina I
packed up and headed south. I used a book written by Joe Wilson titled "A Guide
to the Crooked Road" to find places to hear the music I favor. The book points
out dates, locations, and interesting information about jams, concerts and
festivals along Virginia's Heritage Music Trail. I got to see and hear some
great performances but I also took side trips to places of interest off the
Blueridge Parkway. I've inserted some images here, hope you enjoy.
Joe's book can be purchased on Amazon.

I get pleasure out of remembering my time listening to a particular band or in knowing a place will look the same, have the same feeling. i'll be anticipating seeing familiar faces, hearing remembered music, eating festival food and feeling this is where I belong.
So I'm saddened to know change has happened once again with the passing of one of the great gentlemen of Bluegrass, Smokey Greene. He wrote songs everyone could relate too and learn from. He had a decades long career and could be counted on to move you to tears, smiles, laughs and a good feeling overall. I know for me Jenny Brook just won't be the same without him. But change is constant so i'll have to deal with it and remember Smokey as he was up there on the stage giving it his best for all of us.<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFfHARAtEWDuu7PRt4ENP7MwdELv7wyDH8Wfc2OXcj1SYb-wFm_dzwpn3G2s1RYV3ShUG59tJAGmbuYWYPpplciGr7tizu8y9BqgLLjiUz9wobgnqAyTISkkCM7yqC1ls3A41K1vqIDBr03QwAm3vA_mYApIBp6lAl1m5wjXAGqZRz8dl6wABs84E2oK4L/s280/IMG_7714.JPG" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; clear: left; float: left;"><img alt="" border="0" width="320" data-original-height="210" data-original-width="280" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFfHARAtEWDuu7PRt4ENP7MwdELv7wyDH8Wfc2OXcj1SYb-wFm_dzwpn3G2s1RYV3ShUG59tJAGmbuYWYPpplciGr7tizu8y9BqgLLjiUz9wobgnqAyTISkkCM7yqC1ls3A41K1vqIDBr03QwAm3vA_mYApIBp6lAl1m5wjXAGqZRz8dl6wABs84E2oK4L/s320/IMG_7714.JPG"/></a></div>Jack Hollandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13661202005161538542noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-987230819743069845.post-69136961288245325942023-10-30T19:48:00.000-04:002023-10-30T19:48:10.492-04:00Barr's Fiddle Shop JamSome of the boys having a great time at the shop prior to playing a set out

I told her it didn't have a basket and it appeared to be a parachute. We watched it for ten minutes and it didn't seem to
be getting any lower in the sky. I commented that the person controlling its movement must be really talented at controling
it as it seemed to be at the same altitude the whole time.
We decided to head over to the local airport hoping to see it land and when it finally appeared we realized the skydiver
had a propeller driven by a gas engine strapped to his back and a wing instead of a canopy. How cool.

Got out for a nature ride Saturday and came across a wedding going on in Woodstock Ct.
Weather was not great but they carried on anyway. Beautiful venue known as
Roseland Cottage. Cottage was a summer home of Woodstock native Henry Bowen who was
a successful New York businessman. Owned now by Historic New England.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dx5_91050CRy-lZSBVgwfFH-sBX-6fwfbWPH0STP2yZHbBNJQYNm0YJg1qYRJw51Is-YJz2rDcfUYTpprk-EQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe><Jack Hollandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13661202005161538542noreply@blogger.com0
